Classification of Library Collections

The resources of JU MC Medical Library (including the open access book collection in the Books & Journals Reading Room) have been arranged according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM, USA) classification which is used in most medical libraries around the world. Non-medical items have been classified using the Library of Congress schedules (LC, USA).

In accordance with the applicable standards,

  • a unique call number is assigned to each book which enables users to find the required item on a shelf and in the online catalogue;
  • books on similar subjects are shelved close together to aid browsing; their call numbers start with the same code consisting of letter(s) and digit(s) (classification number).

In order to find books on a particular subject in the JU Libraries Online Catalogue, you should type the classification number you need to the “call number” box and select proper location (Medical Library or any of its institute libraries).
